Classes
All teachings are given in Tibetan by Venerable Geshe Nyima Dorjee and translated into english by Losang our expert translator. The teachings are given in the temple room of DBC at 22 Royal Terrace, Dunedin.
Buddhist practise focusses on the perfection generosity (as one of six primary virtues) so we have structured The Centre to promote generosity so there is no charge for the teachings and they are open to the public.
It is our intention to webcast the teachings from the start of the teaching year in 2009. Please see below for links for viewing the webcasts.
The general programme is as follows:
SUNDAYS, 10--11.00am
-
SUNDAY MORNING MEDITATION. Sunday classes start with chanting of prayers and mantras, then Ven Geshe Nyima Dorjee gives a general Buddhist teaching which leads towards a topic or method of meditation being explained and practised by everyone. The teaching lasts until about 11am. Afterwards there is some opportunity for us to ask some questions of Geshe Nyima. Everyone is welcome to stay for a cup of tea and a chat afterwards.
MONDAYS, 7.30--9.00pm
-
TEACHING. in 2009 this class will be Lorig 'Mind and Awareness' which is sometimes described as a text on Buddhist Cognitive Psycology. This very technical text is relevant to Buddhists and non Buddhists alike. It is reuted to be a very challenging text and may require real study to appreciate each week. It is our intention to have live audio/visual webcasts of the teachings, with some facility to listen to them afterwards too. Teaching will actually begin each monday at 8.00pm and go through to 9.00pm. The classes will incorporate questions for revision during the week. Those in Dunedin are invited to attend a half hour discussion group from 7.30pm to 8.00pm. It is expected that the teaching of this Lorig text will span the entire year.
THURSDAYS, 7.30--9.00pm
-
TEACHING Thursday nights teaching are a 'Lam Rim' or 'graded path to enlightenment' text which guides one from the very first practises right up to the final stages of complete Buddhahood.
The great scope of these texts moves one through the entire spectrum of emotions. At times the translator has needed a break to recover himself from laughing so hard, and other times the messages coming through are very sobering in their lucid and logical descriptions of the uncertain, perilous futures that we all face.
